Digging Forks Are Great.

A digging fork is best used for loosening compacted earth. It’s also good for planting and removing different plants and flowers along with those pesky weeds that pop up out of nowhere. A digging fork will make things a lot easier.

You’ll Need a Garden Hoe.

A garden hoe is mostly used for digging out small holes or to prepare the earth for planting. There are a variety of styles and lengths, from the narrow grubbing to the heart shaped. It all depends of what type of garden you have.

You Gotta’ Have a Good Rake.

This one is self-explanatory but always necessary. Whether the leaves pile up or the dirt needs some flattening, a good rake will make your day a lot easier. There are different rakes for different gardening jobs, including your standard lawn and leaf rake, bow rake, or level head garden rake.

Grab a Pair of Bypass Pruners.

Bypass pruners always come in handy. They’re basically like the Swiss army knife of gardening. Pruners ultimately make easy, clean cuts when snipping flowers, bushes, shrubs, herbs, and other plants.

Yesterday we read an article from the Las Vegas Review-Journal on how to grow beautiful landscapes with less water. There were some great tips we wanted to share with you from that article. Since we’re a Utah-based company, we see so many people who’s yards are dry and beaten to death by the sun, especially this year.

Here are some great tips on how to keep your yard healthy while saving water during those hot summer months.

Plant According to Your Environment

Make sure you choose grass and plants that suit your environment and climate. Make sure you group plants with similar water needs next close to each other.

Keep your soil healthy by adding fertilizer or compost. Properly mulch around your plants, bushes, and trees. Around 2 to 4 inches of mulch reduces evaporation and moderates the temperature of your soil. Most importantly, maintain your yard regularly. This will allow you to use water more efficiently.

Use Less Water

It’s wise to set your sprinklers to plant areas alone. Don’t point it to your driveway or sidewalks. That’s a waste. Water your yard early in the morning when it’s not so hot. This can minimize evaporation up to 30%.

Keep Things Up-to-Date

Be sure to inspect your irrigation system regularly, checking for leaks, broke or clogged sprinklers, and other water-wasting damages. Check to make sure your systems are set to the right amount of pressure. Fixed sprinklers work well at 25 to 30 psi. Moving sprinklers work well at 40 to 50 psi. Install a rain shutoff device to prevent the irrigation systems from running when it’s unnecessary. Look into drip or micro-irrigation rather than watering large areas with above-ground sprinklers. Water is saved and weeds can be reduced as well.

Sometimes is a smart move to call an irrigation professional to come out and inspect your systems. They can also help you discover better ways to maintain your landscape and save more water.
